PC Speakers

Having good PC speakers for our equipment allows us to access a better audio experience.

Listening to music, enjoying a DVD movie, or playing our favourite game with surround sound are advantages that we can appreciate using good quality PC speakers.

Next, we will analyze all the aspects that we must consider when choosing the product that best suits our needs.

What should we take into account when choosing PC speakers?

When purchasing a Desktop set, we will have a set of speakers that come along with the cabinet, keyboard and mouse kit. While these speakers can be used to get out of the way or cover basic usage, it’s always a good idea to aim for a slightly more sophisticated system.

Some of the aspects that we must take into account have to do with the output characteristics of our sound cards, the dimensions of the room where we are going to place them, the space that we are going to occupy and the sound quality at which We intend to arrive, always weighing the economic cost that this means.

Regarding our sound card, we must verify if it has an analogue output, an option that most mid- and low-range cards provide.

4.1, 5.1 or 7.1?

In this case, we will need to make sure if the output is stereo, 4.1, 5.1 or 7.1. The number before the dot represents the number of speakers. The .1 refers to the subwoofer (bass). In more advanced audio cards, we can find digital output to enjoy the better sound quality.

It is important to clarify that if our card is 5.1, we can use stereo speakers without a problem. If we have a stereo card, we will be able to use superior sound systems, but only using two audio channels, without exploiting all the characteristics offered by sets with more channels.

It is essential to clarify that the analogue and digital inputs are different from each other. Some plates and speaker systems allow both types of connection, but others only support one of these modes. It is important to keep this in mind when choosing.

Among the additional features that we can find in sound systems is the possibility of remote control.

In advanced models, wireless connections can be accessed to avoid wiring, especially in speakers located further away from the computer.

The power, that is to say, the number of watts (w) that they can reach, determines the volume they can reproduce. Here we can find the PMPO power, which is what the speakers can reach in a short period (milliseconds).

Generally, we will see high values in this item, but that cannot be sustained over time. The actual power is given by the RMS Power parameter, which measures the maximum power that the speakers can reproduce continuously.

Choosing the PC speakers that fit our needs

If we are in an office or a place where we cannot raise the volume too much, we can try the stereo speakers that the PC brings.

If we are at home, in a not too large space and we want to listen to music, we can choose a 2.1 speaker system.

This option brings two stereo units and includes a subwoofer (preferably, we should choose wood). This system can be plugged into the stereo output of the sound card.

If we have some space in our home, we can opt for a 5.1 option (two front, one central, two rear and a subwoofer) to enjoy DVDs and games. A not too expensive alternative can be an analogue system with plastic satellites and a wooden subwoofer.

If we want something a little more sophisticated, we can go up to a 5.1 digital system (always checking that our sound card supports it), add the remote control option.

7.1 systems – two front, one centre, two sides, two rear, and a subwoofer – can be used to the full in Blu-Ray movies and next-generation games.

A new option appears with the 8.1 systems, which add a rear unit. However, this option still does not have a great application for the home audience, which will have good performance with 5.1 and 7.1 systems.

If we use a laptop, we can opt for a set of speakers designed for laptops.

In addition to considering the technical characteristics, as a final recommendation, it is very important to listen to how the speakers sound before purchasing them.

For this reason, it is an excellent option to find a place that can give us a demonstration to have a first approximation of how tones, instruments and voices are heard.

In this test, we will be able to notice if distortions occur. In addition, we can verify if the volume that it can reach and the quality are by our claims.
